Caddie’s Focus on Hospitality Makes Looping Unforgettable
Omar Garza happened to be scrolling through Instagram one day, combatting boredom during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly everything was shut down, but Omar saw an ad in his feed about caddying at Briggs Ranch in San Antonio, Texas. Omar was finishing up the semester of college online and had recently gotten very into golf, so he was intrigued, both by the prospect of being surrounded by the game of golf and being safely outside due to the circumstances of the pandemic. “I had never heard of Briggs Ranch or CaddieNow at that point, but I thought caddying at a private golf course sounded amazing,” he says.
He clicked on the Instagram ad and completed the steps right from his phone. He heard back from CaddieNow within a couple days and was all in on caddying moving forward.
CaddieConcierge at Briggs Ranch: Making the Best Experience Even Better
Briggs Ranch, part of Dormie Network’s exclusive slate of private destination golf clubs, has an ongoing partnership with CaddieNow, utilizing its Caddie Concierge option to manage its onsite caddie program. Through robust recruitment strategies, including social media ads like the one that attracted Omar, CaddieNow keeps a full pool of caddies ready to take on loops at Briggs Ranch.
CaddieNow’s caddie management platform used by Briggs Ranch lets caddies like Omar reserve dates well in advance or take day-of bookings at his convenience. He simply checks the CaddieNow app to accept loops and payments.
Omar caddies a few loops a week and appreciates the flexibility to work based on his availability. “Given that there’s no day-to-day commitment, I can perfectly balance work, school, and life.” He says balance was especially important to him, because caddying is a side gig that gives him the free range to work as he chooses without having to worry about taking vacation days. He can get out on the course and focus on the members or guests he’s working with. He says he loves getting out on the golf course to connect with golfers, hear their stories, and play a role in their experience at Briggs Ranch.
Omar recalls a specific round as a forecaddie for a foursome in match play. The match was all squared up going into the last hole, and both teams reached the green in regulation. The opposing team was much closer to the pin, while Omar’s group was facing a 35-foot putt on the 18th green to win the match. He had seen this particular pin placement plenty of times before and knew exactly where the ball had to reach before it would break to the hole. “The gentleman gave the appropriate pace to the spot I had marked for him, and the ball broke perfectly to the center of the cup,” Omar describes. “The joy in that single moment made me feel like I had made the entire round and trip for those guests unforgettable.”
The Importance of Caddies in Providing Hospitality
Unbeatable hospitality is an important part of what sets Dormie Network clubs apart from other golf clubs, so caddies are trained to be part of the larger hospitality team at Briggs Ranch. Omar says one of the main things he took away from his CaddieNow orientation was hospitality. “Yes, I loop to help guests play better golf, but assisting them in other areas so they don’t have to think about it is what makes Briggs Ranch so welcoming.”
Omar offers things like bug spray or sunscreen or even Tylenol if they mention a headache or requests a drink order for them as part of the hospitality role that comes with caddying. It’s a role that he takes seriously. “Honestly this is the part that I enjoy most about being a caddy,” he says. “It makes me feel like I’m making their golf trip a better, more stress-free experience overall.”
The role and responsibilities of a caddie at a CaddieNow golf club like Briggs Ranch go far beyond simply working a loop. “Being a caddie has more responsibility than people envision when I explain the job to them,” Omar says, again mentioning what he likes most about caddying—the hospitality and welcoming attitude that he’s able to provide. “Almost every caddie is going to know the rules of golf and be good at reading greens and help with club selection, but providing the utmost hospitality for guests is how I try to separate myself from the rest.”
This hospitality focus also opens doors for caddies to have better relationships with golfers, more comfortable conversations with the groups they’re looping with, and better networking connections.
